Scattering ashes, your final resting place

Scattering ashes, your final resting place

As many of you know, you can specify your funeral wishes in your will.  It must be understood that these are wishes, they are not legally binding.  Sometimes, your body may have been interred or cremated before the will is found.  So if you have a vision of your final resting place, tell your loved ones now.

For those of you who favour cremation over burial, you may also have a preference on where your ashes will be scattered.  Indeed, scattering might not be your preference and resting at home might be what you envision.

If you are dreaming of being scattered on your beloved football team’s pitch or in your favourite national park, do some research now.  Your ashes are biological remains and there are strict rules about where they can be scattered.

There are new, alternative options available that might allow you to fulfil some personal ambitions.  For example, Aura Flights will literally blast your ashes into space and disperse them into the stratospheric winds encircling the earth.  You can still be an astronaut, its not too late.

Other, more nature focussed options include becoming a tree or part of a reef sanctuary.  Biodegradable urns with seed capsules allow your ashes to become part of the tree as it grows.  Solace Reef allow your ashes to be part of a protected reef site off the South West cost of England.

If you have specific funeral wishes, you must discuss them with your will drafter and the people who will have to make them a reality.  As with all estate planning, acting in life will ensure your passing is prepared.

"It was a pleasure to work with Cindy and her team! Even though planning for one’s own death is a project we all can easily put off, it removed an area of stress in my life. I no longer had to wonder if certain people would be taken care of, or where my money would go. Cindy and I worked through the process and she asked a lot of thought provoking questions. The first draft helped me think a second layer down, and made the will more complete. We finalised with her lawyer, signed, witnessed and put away in a safe place, letting my executor know exactly where to find it. I do not hesitate to recommend Cindy’s services."

"Cindy made the process of making a Will painless and efficient which we really appreciated. She was sensitive to avoid putting pressure or hassle to complete the Will quickly which allowed us to consider everything in our own time. Best of all, Cindy's professional support and thorough and clear explanation of the laws pertaining to our situation were very helpful. We would look forward to working with Cindy again on documents personal to our family."
