How much does it cost to die in the UK?

Once you have popped your clogs, you will not care too much about the cost.  But if you are expecting your loved ones to arrange your funeral, how much does it cost to die?

At the end of 2018, the average UK funeral cost £4,000.

One of the major factors in the recent price hike is the increase in costs of council services.  There has been an increase of up to 30% for basic services.

Another service provider increasing the costs above the rate of inflation are some funeral directors.  Kings Court Trust, a UK probate service, advises “typically half of burial costs go towards a coffin, a gravedigger and buying the lease for a plot, while a third of a cremation bill goes on the use of a crematorium and the service itself.”

With all parties to the funeral process squeezing the margins, families trying to bury loved ones will be the ones feeling the pinch.

Geography also plays a part.  South West London is the most expensive place to purchase a funeral, Omagh in Northern Ireland is the cheapest at £255.

One of the simplest ways to ensure that your family can afford to arrange your funeral is to leave money.  You can purchase a funeral plan in advance or leave a legacy that is dependent on your funeral being organised.

"It was a pleasure to work with Cindy and her team! Even though planning for one’s own death is a project we all can easily put off, it removed an area of stress in my life. I no longer had to wonder if certain people would be taken care of, or where my money would go. Cindy and I worked through the process and she asked a lot of thought provoking questions. The first draft helped me think a second layer down, and made the will more complete. We finalised with her lawyer, signed, witnessed and put away in a safe place, letting my executor know exactly where to find it. I do not hesitate to recommend Cindy’s services."

"Cindy made the process of making a Will painless and efficient which we really appreciated. She was sensitive to avoid putting pressure or hassle to complete the Will quickly which allowed us to consider everything in our own time. Best of all, Cindy's professional support and thorough and clear explanation of the laws pertaining to our situation were very helpful. We would look forward to working with Cindy again on documents personal to our family."
