Weird Wills – A woman-less library

Occasionally a will reveals something about the testator that comes as a surprise.  Sometimes a family member is disinherited or a family heirloom is not received, but there is an instance of a whole gender being disowned……..

Townsend Murphy Zink died in 1930.  The lawyer from Iowa was married with one daughter.  He estate was estimated to be worth between $35,000 and $80,000 – a considerable sum.

His will created a trust that would last for 75 years.  The lawyer estimated that it would have grown in value to around $3 million by then.  The resulting funds should be used for his tiny home town of Le Mars, Iowa to create the Zink Womanless Library.  Zink’s will was very specific.  Entrances were to be clearly marked “No Women Admitted” and no woman could have anything to do with its design, construction, operation or maintenance.

His misogyny was made clear in his final words.  “My intense hatred of women, is not of recent origin or development, or based upon any personal difference I ever had with them, but it is the result of my experiences with women, observations of them, and study of all literature and philosophical works.”

Local gossip suggested that the hatred could actually be traced to a breach of promise suit threatened by a young woman he courted between marriages.

Fortunately his poor widow had signed a prenuptial agreement however she was obliged to pay the trust created in the will $40 a month to stay in the family home…..

Zink’s daughter, to whom he left $5, successfully contested the will.

"It was a pleasure to work with Cindy and her team! Even though planning for one’s own death is a project we all can easily put off, it removed an area of stress in my life. I no longer had to wonder if certain people would be taken care of, or where my money would go. Cindy and I worked through the process and she asked a lot of thought provoking questions. The first draft helped me think a second layer down, and made the will more complete. We finalised with her lawyer, signed, witnessed and put away in a safe place, letting my executor know exactly where to find it. I do not hesitate to recommend Cindy’s services."

"Cindy made the process of making a Will painless and efficient which we really appreciated. She was sensitive to avoid putting pressure or hassle to complete the Will quickly which allowed us to consider everything in our own time. Best of all, Cindy's professional support and thorough and clear explanation of the laws pertaining to our situation were very helpful. We would look forward to working with Cindy again on documents personal to our family."
