Earlier this year, a surprising landmark ruling was made in such a case.   A court in Brazil has decided that the pension benefits of a man should be equally split between his wife and a woman with whom he had had a 20-year relationship during his marriage.

The case has taken 2 years to resolve.  However Brazilian law experts have heralded this as a triumph for ” the principles of equality and dignity” for the common-law spouse.  No comment was available from the spouse.
