Where will you be laid to rest?

In the words of Rupert Brooke:

‘If I should die, think only this of me;

That there’s some corner of a foreign field.

That is for ever England.

There shall be.’

For many expats, if you ask them where they will be buried, the answer is often ‘home’ and by home they mean their country of origin. There may be a family plot at a local cemetery where the rest of the family are interred or a family place of worship. UK’s SAGA surveys reveal 90% of British people living abroad expat to be buried in the UK.

Thailand and Spain hold the macabre honour of being number 1 and 2 on the most common place for British citizens to die abroad. In 2013-14 the Foreign office reported 4,110 British deaths abroad, 362 Britons died in Thailand.

But a little bit of research will reveal that repatriation is a costly business.   Repatriation from Asia to Europe, or any long haul route can cost in excess of £20,000. If you have not planned in advance for this hefty bill, who will pick up the tab?

If burial in your country of origin is important to you, you can prepare now. Tell your loved ones that this is your testamentary wish. Check your medical and travel insurance policies – many of these include or can offer a repatriation service – upgrade your policy now if you want this service and make sure that you share the details of the policy and cover concerned.

Be aware that there is a significant amount of international administration in moving a corpse – your executors will need professional assistance to fill your wishes. There are specialist companies around the world offering these services, find your local provider now. Some offer insurance and prepaid plans that will literally cost an arm and a leg but for some people this is their dying wish.

"It was a pleasure to work with Cindy and her team! Even though planning for one’s own death is a project we all can easily put off, it removed an area of stress in my life. I no longer had to wonder if certain people would be taken care of, or where my money would go. Cindy and I worked through the process and she asked a lot of thought provoking questions. The first draft helped me think a second layer down, and made the will more complete. We finalised with her lawyer, signed, witnessed and put away in a safe place, letting my executor know exactly where to find it. I do not hesitate to recommend Cindy’s services."

"Cindy made the process of making a Will painless and efficient which we really appreciated. She was sensitive to avoid putting pressure or hassle to complete the Will quickly which allowed us to consider everything in our own time. Best of all, Cindy's professional support and thorough and clear explanation of the laws pertaining to our situation were very helpful. We would look forward to working with Cindy again on documents personal to our family."
